The kaleidoscope was invented in 1816 by a Scottish man named David Brewster. He wasn’t trying to invent the kaleidoscope; he was just following his passion for the science of light, known as optics.
In fact, he actually invented the word kaleidoscope! It comes from three latin words:
- kalos = beautiful
- eidos = shapes
- skopeo = to see
Or in other words, “to see beautiful shapes.”
Years ago, when I took my two children to a Build and Grow Workshop at a Lowe’s Home Improvement store, they made wooden kaleidoscopes. I found the information inside the pamphlet that came with the project so intriguing that I wrote a book about how the kaleidoscope was invented.
So, my picture book, Kaleidoscope Eyes, still has yet to see the light of day. But I know there’s an editor out there dying to get their hands on it! While the world awaits the eventual arrival of my book, I give you a How It’s Made video from YouTube. Enjoy!
when we we’re Children our Dad did a lot of Arts and craft with us…….even build a Kaleidoscope……..brought back sweet Memories
